PBIS
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive, school-wide approach to promoting positive behavior and creating supportive learning environments for all students. Grounded in evidence-based practices, PBIS focuses on teaching and reinforcing expected behaviors, using data to guide decision-making, and implementing systems of support to improve student outcomes.
In the Cypress School District, PBIS is an essential component of our efforts to foster safe, respectful, and inclusive school communities. Each of our schools implements PBIS with a shared commitment to helping students develop the social-emotional and behavioral skills they need to thrive.
Core features of PBIS include:
- Clearly defined behavioral expectations that are taught, modeled, and reinforced throughout the school environment
- Consistent and positive reinforcement systems to encourage appropriate behavior
- Use of data to monitor progress, guide interventions, and support continuous improvement
- Multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) that provide additional help for students who need it
PBIS supports a positive school climate and helps reduce disruptive behaviors, allowing more time and energy to be focused on learning. Schools customize their PBIS implementation to reflect their unique culture and student needs while aligning with district-wide goals and practices.
Luther students and staff have defined appropriate behaviors for each setting on campus. These positive student behaviors support Luther’s PAWS expectations:
Practice Kindness
Act Respectfully
Work Responsibly
Stay Safe
At the beginning of each school year, Luther students receive explicit instruction about the positive behavioral expectations. These behaviors are positively reinforced with golden PAWS tickets and PBIS Rewards points, which students can redeem at the school store. Behavioral expectations are retaught and reinforced throughout the year at schoolwide assemblies and celebrations.
Luther is committed to creating and maintaining a learning environment where students feel safe and supported. By focusing on the positive reinforcement of appropriate behaviors, we give every child the opportunity to live up to our high expectations.
